We are delighted that a PhD project proposal from the Centre for Textile Conservation and the School of Engineering has been shortlisted for the University of Glasgow’s prestigious Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Scholarship scheme.

We are now recruiting a PhD student to take on the project, starting in October 2015. Ten scholarships will be awarded and the final selection of projects will be based on the quality of both student and applicant.  The closing date is January 23, 2015.

The PhD investigation will involve the use of digital image correlation and computational modelling to compare the effectiveness of different tapestry conservation techniques and methods of display, including sloping boards. The PhD student will be immersed in both experimental and computational mechanics throughout the project and therefore the ideal candidate will be an engineer with prior experience in finite element modelling, continuum mechanics and experimental materials characterisation techniques, though with a strong interest in history and in applying modern engineering to help preserve our historical heritage.
